In this article we rank the five things praying women reach for when the mind will not shut off at 1 AM: what the 2026 trial says about each, which ones are really just music, and the one that puts the trial’s mechanism in your hand.
We started with the trial. In 2026 the Annals of Family Medicine published a randomized study of 180 family-medicine patients; the anxiety arm needed a GAD-7 score of 10 or higher.1 Half got five minutes of in-person Christian prayer from a trained volunteer. Half got five minutes of music.
“Proximal intercessory prayer vs control group participants reported significantly larger (1 to 2 point) reductions in pain immediately and 2 weeks later, and larger (roughly 2 point) reductions in Likert anxiety immediately and GAD-7 at 2 and 6 weeks.”1 “Participants reported no adverse events.”
So the question for every item below is simple. Does it put spoken prayer within reach at 1 AM, or does it put music, text, or a screen there instead?
SKIP TO #1 → THE ONE WE WOULD HAND A FRIENDThe most downloaded answer to a racing mind. Rain sounds, guided breathing, a soft voice counting you down.
What it gets right: They are easy, they are on the phone you are already holding, and some of the breathing tracks are genuinely well made.
Where it falls down: They are the control group. The trial gave the music group exactly this, and the prayer group beat it at every measurement. And they live on the screen that woke you up.
Verdict: Fine for noise. Not what the trial measured.
A stack of Scripture cards or a jar of folded promises on the nightstand. Cheap, sincere, and it puts the Word close.
What it gets right: Real Scripture, within arm’s reach, no screen.
Where it falls down: Lamp on, glasses on, eyes open, and you are reading. The trial’s mechanism was a voice in the room, not text in your hand. By the time you find the card you are fully awake.
Verdict: Right Word, wrong doorway. Reading is not hearing.
A daily reading, a plan, a push notification at 7 AM. Millions of women use one.
What it gets right: Solid daily content, and most will read a passage aloud if you dig for the button.
Where it falls down: It opens onto the same lit screen as the news and the messages, with the notifications waiting, and most charge a monthly subscription to keep it. At 1 AM it is one tap from the scroll that makes it worse.
Verdict: Good at 7 AM. Dangerous at 1 AM.
The right answer. Nothing on this list replaces it, and this page is not trying to.
What it gets right: Everything. It is the Word itself.
Where it falls down: It is eight feet away, in the dark, and it does not read itself to you. In the three seconds before you decide anything at 1 AM, your hand has already chosen the phone. The trial had a volunteer praying out loud. The dresser has a book.
Verdict: Keep it. Then solve the reach problem so you actually get back to it.
A small hand-carved acacia cross on a 27.5 inch cord. Hold any phone to it and the day’s verse opens and is read aloud. No app to open, no account, no battery, nothing to find in the dark. The verse is spoken into the room, you pray it back with the name you carry, and the phone goes face down.

The trial tested prayer, not a necklace, and wood does nothing on its own. But it is the only item on this list that puts a voice speaking God’s Word over you in your hand at 1 AM without a screen in front of your face, which is the closest any of the five gets to what the trial did. Every order ships as a pair: one for you, one for the woman you would have called at 1 AM if you called anybody.
What it gets right: Hearing, not reading. Within reach, not eight feet away. One price, once, instead of a subscription. Rated 4.9/5 by 7,000+ believers, prayed over before it ships.
Where it falls down: It sells out. Batches are hand-finished and small. This one was restocked on Sunday, November 1, and when a batch goes, orders wait for the next one.
Verdict: The one we would hand a friend tonight.
Two crosses for $64.99. About $32 each. Less than one month of the subscriptions it replaces.

This week: the scroll is gone; you pray, you breathe, you sleep. Six weeks from now: the same six weeks the trial ran, and you are still hearing His Word every night.
P.S. The trial ran six weeks. Give it the same. Tap it every night for 60 nights, and if your nights are not different, every penny comes back.
